你見過一隻巨兔在月光下吹笛嗎? 你養過一隻會跳出魚缸和你親嘴的魚嗎? 一個豬形的冰箱會嚇著你還是讓你覺得很好玩? 它們可能只存在於你的夢中—或是在幾米的繪本中。
幾米主修美術，在九O年代初期他已經是個成功的藝術家。但他的生命仍有起伏。幾米過去都在臺北一家大型廣告公司工作，但是不知怎麼地，他似乎不覺得滿足。在1993年底的一個寒冷的冬夜，他遇見了一位算命師。這名女士鼓勵他自行創業，並說他的努力在兩年內會有代價。在這個短暫的會面後，算命師令人振奮的話將幾米心中深植已久的陰鬱一掃而空。隔年他選擇當一名自由插畫家，待在家裡工作。同時，他滿懷希望地等待1995年的到來，他認為那會是他生命中的轉捩點。
然而，在1995年的春天，幾米被診斷出罹患血癌。「上天給我這樣一個驚心動魄的體驗，究竟是想傳達什麼樣的訊息呢？」回憶起那段在醫院的日子時，幾米覺得納悶。在接下來的後半年中，除了忍受疼痛的治療外，他什麼也沒做。他常常掉淚，不僅因為他認為自己的前途渺茫，也因為他的心隨著日子一天天過去變得愈發敏感。甚至只是看到鴿子在他的病房外憩息，他都會忍不住哭泣。
因為這個沉重的打擊，在幾米生命中曾經看來微不足道的小事，都變得意味深長，而過去那些他看重的事在當時也變得不那麼重要了。他突然了解到繪畫不只是一種謀生之道，更是他表達感受以及向世界傳達「訊息」的管道。無疑地，這樣的頓悟加強了他作品的張力，也永遠影響了他的繪畫生涯。自那時起，幾米的繪本中常帶有一絲憂傷，特別是那些以都市為場景的書，如《地下鐵》及《向左走‧向右走》。一種神祕的氛圍也開始出現在他的繪畫中，讀者常能遇見超大型的動物和奇異的背景。幾米創造出屬於自己如夢般的奇幻世界，一塊喜悅和悲傷的淨土。
